Why Photography?
Growing up, I always had a thing about pictures... snapped away on the camera like film was free and so was processing it for prints.. and heck.. those might as well have been free too.. In fact, I still have about 5 rolls of undeveloped film in the closet.. no telling how old they are, or what is on them. The last time I developed a few rolls I had found, they ended up being from about 10 years before, and were of my honeymoon trip to San Antonio, Texas. I am still curious about what could be on these 5 rolls, but like all the years past, just cant seem to remember to take them to get them developed!
Fast forward to the present, and we have digital photography.. THANK GOODNESS!
The amatuer paparazzi~ that'd be me. Always snapping at any event big or small.. At first, it was fun.. a hobby.. I enjoyed seeing the end results hoping I caought that adorable, precious, really good, funny, or irreplaceable moment on film that would be shared with everyone.
As I got older, people I loved dearly started passing away. Some too young. I started reflecting back on the pictures. Memories of Good Times. Laughter. Living. Some things I had totally forgotten about, others I didnt even know about.
It was then that I realized the importance of pictures.
Pictures are a back up of the brain for when the memory begins to fade. Pictures are remembrances of the good times, when bad times overwhelm you. Pictures tell a life story. Pictures are a trace of your legacy.
I cannot fathom what the world would be like if there were no pictures. The memory can recall specific details of people, places, events; the pictures they tell of people, places, and events. They tell specific things that the memory cannot create. Have you ever spoke with someone over the phone, and "pictured in your mind" what they looked like, what their home looked like, or what the place they visited looked like, through a description? The memory creates a vision of what it expects things to look like, only to personally visit or see it in a picture, and find out it is nothing like you visioned it to be.
What if there were no pictures of babies, of children, of families? What if there were no pictures of weddings, anniversaries, or parties? What if there were no pictures from a hundred or even thousands of years ago? We would rely only on memory. Would we remember people looked like? Their eyes, their smile, their resemblances of family? Would we remember our first cars? Our first birthdays? Our twenty-first birthdays? Would we remember what our grandparents looked like? Our mothers, fathers, sisters, or brothers?
Would we remember the sunset, the vacation spot, the blue oceans or the white sand? Would we remember the family and friend gatherings that were one of the greatest times ever?
Pictures are so important. Whether you use a photographer, or snap pictures yourself, never forget to get the pictures. When someone else is taking pictures, don't shun them away saying I hate pictures.. Just remember, sometimes, life happens and the pictures are all you have left, or all you leave behind.
